After Oz by Gordon McAlpine

I've never been a super fan of The Wizard of Oz. I've watched it a few times but it just never captivated me the way it has others. I was hesitant to read After Oz but figured I'd give it a try as I could always DNF it. Imagine my surprise whenI discovered I was captivated by this read.

The Gale family farm is destroyed. Eleven year old Dorthy is missing. They have just about given up hope but she is found alive four days later. Dorthy shares her story of what occurred in the magical land of Oz but she is not believed. They think she is crazy and then when the body of a unliked neighbor is found murdered - Dorthy is blamed.

Dorthy is placed in an asylum. She slowly forms a relationship with Dr. Evenlyn Grace Wilford a 28 year old pscyhologist. Dorthy's story of Oz unfolds as does that of the towns people. McApline is brilliant. His story unfolds in alternating chapters. It's unique and engrossing.

It does have contain subjects some may find difficult to read. There is also a lot of religion in it which I thought would be off putting as I am not religious but I found that it was necessary to the story telling and not distracting.

If you ready one murder mystery before 2024 is over - let this one be it.

Ushers is a short story by Joe Hill. It's 29 pages of entertainment. The story starts off with a young man being questioned by Federal Agents because he has managed to escape not one but two death disasters. The story unfolds and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Expect to be pulled into the story and left wanting more! Hill, excels at short stories. He manages to develop characters, storylines and transport a reader into his world with finesse and intrigue.

** I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
